Speed Math Tricks — Do Mental Math Faster
Mental Math Guide · 6 min read · MindArena
You don't need to be a math genius to do arithmetic fast. These shortcuts let you bypass traditional calculation methods and arrive at answers in under a second.
Addition Tricks
Round and Compensate
Instead of adding awkward numbers, round one up to the nearest 10, add it, then subtract the difference.
47 + 38 → Round 38 to 40 → 47 + 40 = 87 → subtract 2 → 85
Left to Right Addition
Instead of carrying digits right-to-left (like on paper), add left-to-right in your head. Add the tens first, then the ones.
64 + 28 → 60 + 20 = 80 → 4 + 8 = 12 → 80 + 12 = 92
Making 10s
When adding a list of single digits, look for pairs that sum to 10 and group them first.
7 + 3 + 8 + 2 + 6 → (7+3) + (8+2) + 6 = 10 + 10 + 6 = 26
⚡ SPEED MATH TIP
In MindArena's Speed Math game, addition questions appear most frequently. Master round-and-compensate first — it's the single highest-value trick for the game.
Subtraction Tricks
Subtract by Adding Up
It's often faster to count up from the smaller number to the larger one. This is how cashiers make change.
83 - 47 → From 47 to 50 = 3 → From 50 to 83 = 33 → Answer: 36
Round Up Then Adjust
52 - 19 → 52 - 20 = 32 → +1 (because we subtracted 1 too many) → 33
Multiplication Tricks
Multiplying by 9
To multiply any number by 9: multiply by 10, then subtract the number.
7 × 9 → 7 × 10 = 70 → 70 - 7 = 63
Multiplying by 5
Multiply by 10 and divide by 2 (or divide by 2 first if the number is even).
18 × 5 → 18 / 2 = 9 → 9 × 10 = 90
Squaring Numbers Ending in 5
Multiply the tens digit by (tens digit + 1), then append 25.
35² → 3 × 4 = 12 → append 25 → 1225
75² → 7 × 8 = 56 → append 25 → 5625
Doubling and Halving
When one number is even, halve it and double the other to make calculation easier.
24 × 15 → 12 × 30 = 360
Division Tricks
Divisibility Rules (Instant Checks)
- Divisible by 2: last digit is even
- Divisible by 3: digit sum is divisible by 3 (e.g., 123 → 1+2+3=6, yes)
- Divisible by 4: last two digits divisible by 4
- Divisible by 5: ends in 0 or 5
- Divisible by 9: digit sum divisible by 9
Dividing by 5
Multiply by 2 and divide by 10.
95 ÷ 5 → 95 × 2 = 190 → 190 ÷ 10 = 19
Practice Makes Fast
These tricks only become instinctive with repetition. The first time you try round-and-compensate it might feel slower than your normal method. After 50 uses, it becomes automatic. Play Speed Math daily and you'll find these shortcuts activating automatically within 1-2 weeks.
