Speed Math is a timed mental arithmetic game. Problems appear one at a time — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or a mix of all four — and you type or tap the answer as quickly as you can. The clock keeps ticking. Every correct answer scores; wrong answers don't end the game, but they cost you the precious seconds you spent on them.
The point isn't to compute like a calculator. It's to build the kind of comfortable, fast number sense that makes everyday math — bills, tips, estimates, measurements — feel automatic. After a few weeks of practice, problems your brain used to struggle with start solving themselves before you've consciously thought about them.
Mental arithmetic competitions are as old as recorded history — Indian Vedic mathematicians developed shortcut techniques in the early centuries CE that are still taught today. The first international mental calculation world championship was held in 1997 in Germany. Modern Speed Math online games descend from schoolroom "math facts" drills, repurposed as timed digital challenges.
For multi-digit addition and subtraction, work left to right, not right to left. School teaches column addition starting from the units column, but that's optimised for paper — not your head. In your head, the leftmost digits are by far the most important: they tell you roughly what the answer is.
For 487 + 326, add the hundreds first: 400 + 300 = 700. Then the tens: 80 + 20 = 100. Already you know the answer is around 800. Add the units last: 7 + 6 = 13. Total: 813. Front-end estimation will often reveal the answer before you've finished the exact calculation — useful when seconds matter.
If the answer choices are far apart (say, 800 vs. 1,400), estimation alone is enough — you don't need the exact value. Skip the careful arithmetic and answer in under a second.
The brain handles operations that land on multiples of 10 dramatically faster than messy ones. So restructure every problem to use them. For 9 + 7, don't compute 9 + 7 directly — think 9 + 1 (= 10) + 6 = 16. You broke 7 into 1 and 6 because the 1 completes the 10.
The same trick works for subtraction. 23 − 8 is awkward — but 23 − 3 (= 20) − 5 = 15 is instant. Once you've internalised the complement-to-10 reflex, multi-digit arithmetic becomes a sequence of round-number hops instead of grinding column work.
For two-digit multiplication, never compute the whole product at once — split one operand into pieces that are easier to multiply. 12 × 15 becomes 12 × 10 + 12 × 5 = 120 + 60 = 180. 23 × 7 becomes 20 × 7 + 3 × 7 = 140 + 21 = 161.
Always break the easier operand. If one number ends in 5 or 0, split that one. If one number is just above or below a round number (like 19 or 21), use that: 19 × 7 = 20 × 7 − 7 = 140 − 7 = 133. The distributive split is the single most powerful multiplication shortcut for mental math.
In a multiplication, you can double one factor and halve the other without changing the answer. 4 × 16 is easier as 2 × 32 = 64. 8 × 25 is easier as 4 × 50 = 200, or even 2 × 100 = 200.
The rule: keep halving and doubling until one factor becomes a round number — then the multiplication collapses into trivial work. Combined with the distributive split, doubling-and-halving will handle the large majority of two-digit problems faster than long-form arithmetic ever could.

For most people the biggest single win is the complement-to-10 technique: when adding numbers near a multiple of 10, round up first and subtract the difference. For multiplication, the distributive split (12 × 15 = 12 × 10 + 12 × 5) handles almost any two-digit case in your head.
